Saint Raphael Conference of St. Vincent de Paul

Our St. Vincent de Paul Society Conference has been present at St. Raphael for a year. The Conference continues to be dedicated to serving the needs of the poor by providing beds, mattresses and bedding, emergency food supplies, temporary rent and utility assistance and sharing resources for additional longer-term basic needs such as furniture, food assistance and employment opportunities.

Over this first year, we have fielded over 60 requests for assistance, provided approximately 40 beds, mattresses and bedding, especially giving those beds to over 20 children. Over $14,000 in assistance has been given to help pay for rent, gas, electric and water bills to keep utilities from being turned off and helping people not get evicted from their homes. Helping other conferences in other parishes pay for high-cost needs, (called twinning), has also been done to help others.

Special thanks to Father Dan and the volunteer team who work so hard to help so many. We are especially grateful for the generosity of our parishioners. Your donations make it possible to help so many in need. Thank you!

Historically, SVDP was established in 1833 by Antoine Frederic Ozanam, a student at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. He saw the appalling conditions suffered in the political, religious, social and economic conditions of Paris in the 19th century. He knew the good the Church had done but Ozanam wanted to do more. He gathered 5 students and formed the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Today, thousands of conferences throughout the world minister to the needs of the poor by accompanying them - helping them in their present need and assisting to direct them out of poverty. Our Diocese has 60 conferences throughout 8 counties in Northeast Ohio. Mr. Jack Bedell, a Saint Raphael Parishioner, is the director of our Diocesan St. Vincent de Paul Society. With his help, we began a conference here in 2025 and presently have about 15 members of our parish who will assist others in Bay Village and on the west side of Cleveland who suffer the results of poverty, unemployment, illness or other catastrophic situations which cry out for help and assistance. With the continued support of our parishioners, we all will continue the work work to help our brothers and sisters.

‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ (Matthew 25:40)
